So here's something different -- an audio post. In the mp3 I explain my reasons for trying this, and talk -- sounding somewhat more paranoid than I intended -- about a website I saw the other day.
I'm not yet totally convinced of the usefulness or convenience of this form of blogging, but it's got to be worth trying at least once, right?
great idea. and I never heard your voice before, so that's a plus too. and the audio quality is very good IMO, especially I like the transitions and all the other pro-sounding bits...
but, it stops rather abruptly at the end?
oh, and the website you talk about (not giving away the name just yet ;) is really rather silly, but I'm not sure whether your paranoia is necessary, at least I don't think that it's the kind of scam page to collect email addresses. Besides, all our email addresses probably got collected from someone somewhere already anyway. ;)
Bah. I'll have to wait until I'm near a computer with sound to listen to this. One reason I'm not convinced about this idea of audio blogging. It's hardly accessible, is it?
spiney: It should fade out at the end, maybe your download terminated early or something? and yeah, it sounded highly paranoid in retrospect, but the point I really wanted to make was that the kind of scam I describe is almost inevitable, and may already exist in the guise of a popular site.
Joe: No it's not accessible, and I see that as the biggest problem with it, but I've just about come to terms with it as being about two different audiences. I wouldn't want anyone to feel obliged to download an audio entry just because they normally read the blog that it's on. Some people won't want to, and that's fine.
I'm thinking that one possible compromise is to put a link to a text transcript alongside the link to the audio, but that would take time.
Anyway, I'm not planning to make a habit of this... it's just an experiment.
Joe: They're very accessible. I run ipodder (ipodder.org) which downloads MP3s listed in people's RSS and puts them on my iPod. Then, each day I have fresh content to listen to in the car or when I'm walking.

Yes, but you need broadband to really make use of it.
Broadband. *BROADBAND!*
