Most participants in NaNoWriMo are trying, with varying success, to pace themselves fairly equally - meaning that to write 50,000 words in a month, you need to write 1,667 per day.
I didn't get off to a good start on my first day, finishing with something pitiful like 120 words. But by day 3, I was right on target again, 5000 words... a tenth of a novel in a tenth of a month.
Something must have gone really well tonight, because since 7pm I somehow wrote another 3000. This puts me the best part of a day ahead, and makes me think I might actually finish this after all.
It's worth pointing out in the interests of fairness that the results are, by and large, abysmal, and that if there's even a slightly good story in there, it'll have to be edited and redrafted to within an inch of its life, but... ah well. It's not about quality.
Lastly, thanks to the wizardry of modern technology, you can see what my wordcount is at any moment, along with other fascinating stuff such as an excerpt of the least sucky bit of my novel, on my NaNoWriMo Profile Page.

Eek no! Not unless it turns out not to suck completely, and even then I'll have to edit it extensively before I can even think of uploading it. Trust me, that extract is not at all representative of the crud I'm churning out - not in style, nor in quality.
I decided to participate in this event myself, even though it's only National Novel Writing Month, not International Novel Writing Month. I've reached a whopping 9000 words. My problem, as usual, is that I seem to be writing another novella. I'm about half way through my plot already. I'm doomed to write novellas for the rest of my life.
