Bits and bobs

I haven't yet updated the site this weekend, so here's a few random links.

Someone's running a weblog on the subject of idiotic website linking policies. It makes interesting reading, it's both hilarious and head-shakingly demoralising in equal measure. For example, the Washington Post will let you link to any page on its site, but it says it reserves the right to revoke permission for the link at any time. I don't know how they think that is going to work... and that's one of the less stupid ones.

Via Metafilter, here's a mostly pointless page that uses Markov chains and an existing vocabulary to generate new and syntactically plausible words, given a few letters as a 'seed'. I tried it with triopt, and it came up with trioptive, trioptivate, trioptility and trioptimise. Now I just need to find some uses for these cool neologisms...

Oh, and I'm still writing that novel, and so far it's awful. I'm going to append a word count to the end of each entry, starting with this one, so you can see how I'm doing. Those of a mathematical inclination will realise that to write 50,000 words in a month I need to write about 1,600 per day, so this can be used as a benchmark to work out just how far behind schedule I am on any given day.

Current word count: 4464
