I like games that come with big, thick, meaty manuals.
It used to be the case that boxed games were full of stuff like that. Install guides, quick reference cards, keyboard layouts, maps of paper or card or cloth, real CD holders - not paper slips or cardboard sleeves, but proper plastic jewel cases - and, of course, the manual. Thick, printed in colour, sometimes even spiral bound, it could go on a shelf, it could be flipped through while playing, it could be read from cover to cover in bed. A thick, well-produced manual was an indication not only of the complexity of the game, but of the quality of the overall product.
Nowadays a lot of games come in DVD cases, meaning there's no room for a proper manual. Usually you just get a slip of paper telling you how to read the PDF file that's on the CD. And even if you do get a boxed game with a printed manual, chances are it's been horribly optically reduced to about half of its original page size and length, rendering it totally unpleasant to read.
Civilization 3 has a 240 page manual. It's clear, it's well-written, it's encyclopaedic. I'm still only half way through reading it. In bed, of course.

i would say it depends on the area that you live. gas can sometimes be more dangerous with little ones running around. but if you're in an area where blackouts/power shortages are likely, go GAS! even when your electricity's off, you still have a way to cook, purify water, and clean for your family. plus gas leaks are more and more unlikely to occur. but if you go gas make sure to install a detector you can get at any hardware store.
